Happy Halloween!

So, the first quarter is over and my student teacher has moved onto her next assignment.  In preparation for starting guided reading groups in January, I decide to introduce Jan Richardson's pre- and emergent guided reading groups…this week.  Now, you may already see the flaw in this plan, but at this point I had not.  Monday I did assessments during the Daily 5.  Tuesday my first group was rough, but I figured it was a new routine and the kids just needed to get used to it.  Wednesday I was repeating directions at least 5 times each, and not in a calm voice, and feeling like the worst teacher in the world.  My students were moving in slow motion and I was speaking a foreign language.  Then…it dawned on me…Halloween was TOMORROW!  Now it all made sense.  When you don't have little kids in your home anymore, you forget how exciting Halloween can be.

Today I have decided to join them, since I can't beat them.  I have my super hero garb and posted a sign outside my classroom door, "I teach.  What's your super power?"  We are making rice crispy treats together and writing stories about our costumes.  I'm ready for the day, bulges and all!

The teachers at our school are trying to get together and declare Halloween the last Friday in October.  No bleary eyes. No tummy aches. No stretching the holiday out for a week because we decided to do Trick or Treating over the weekend.  Are you willing to join our cause?
