Pilgrims: A Week of Essential Questions

How is our life alike/different than the Pilgrims?
A Week Long Study of the Pilgrims

MONDAY
Reading: Who were the Pilgrims?
Big Book: A Thanksgiving Story
Writing: What did the Pilgrims have to do to get to America?
What kind of transportation did they take?  Adventure or Journey?  
Make a list of what they would have taken.  
Measure out 112 feet on the playground and draw outline of the deck.  Draw 100 people.
Do a directed draw of the Mayflower.
Interactive sentence telling how the Pilgrims got to America.

TUESDAY
Reading: What was it life for the Pilgrims when they first got to America?
What kind of things do you do in the winter?
Review the seasons.
Read the "Winter" chapter in The Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving.
Writing: Why was it so difficult for the Pilgrims at first?
Make a "To Do" list for the Pilgrims.
Discuss why or why not the task on the list may be difficult to do during the winter months.
Draw and label a tree in the four seasons.
Write an interactive sentence about the first winter in Plymouth.

WEDNESDAY
Reading: How did life change for the Pilgrims when spring came?
What can you do in the spring?
Read the "Spring" and "Summer" chapters of The Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving.
Make a Venn diagram comparing the Pilgrims' life in the winter and the spring/summer.
Writing: What were the Pilgrims doing during their first spring and summer in their new home?
Make a list of what the Pilgrims did in the spring/summer.
Draw four things the Pilgrims did in the spring/summer.
Write an interactive sentence telling about how life changed for the Pilgrims.

THURSDAY
Reading: Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?
Why did the Pilgrims celebrate Thanksgiving?

FRIDAY
Compare ourselves to Pilgrims.
Big Book: Life of a Pilgrim Boy and Girl
